Assessment - Overview

There is no point in making a candidate do an assessment, either online or written, unless the assessment is going to result in a positive change of some sort. That could be:

  • An individual receiving acknowledgement of their achievement
  • An individual receiving a reward for their achievement
  • The organisation receiving increased benefit from having a skillful person on staff
  • The organisation being able to prove something

The organisation or business has to develop a clear understanding of the value of the assessment and what it proves, and then set in place a robust system of collecting data. That may sound so simple it does not need stating but consider:

Why do you train people in first aid?

  • Hopefully the individual will receive a certificate that at the very least will be useful for their CV
  • Maybe you will give the individual an extra allowance when they become the company's first aid person
  • Perhaps your organisation now has someone who can better assess any workplace injuries

Obviously your organisation can now prove that you are meeting OSH standards.

Without collecting the data:

  • How will you know that on every shift there is a person experienced in first aid?
  • What do you do when a trained person is off sick or on leave?

A robust system for the collection of training and assessment data allows supervisors and management to quickly adapt workflow or shift staffing to meet the unexpected.

The right person at the right time

Boxhill Pulp and Paper plant had a huge staff of over 500 operating over three shifts. When a shift member called in sick the supervisors needed to be able to quickly contact an available person to come in. That employee needed to hold the correct certificates if they were expected to operate skilled machinery.

Edutech KM staff were able to create a complete training database system that gave the company the reporting options they needed. A supervisor at any timecould access a report of everyone who was available for that shift and who held the appropriate certificates or skills. The time spent searching for the right replacement was cut dramatically.

Consider carefully

If you have a large staff and need a similar system, you should start by listing all the functions you want the database to perform. Grafting on extra functionality when the database and interface are partly complete will add a huge time and dollar cost.

Allowing plenty of time at the beginning to define exactly what you want the database to do will save you thousands of dollars down the track.

We would be happy to discuss with you how we could design a structure that met all you needs. Simply click here or email us.
