Policies and procedures for legislative obligations

As well as all the business-related costs that organisations attract just by existing (taxation, employment issues, financial management etc), businesses must also meet many pieces of legislation to do with their employees' performance:

  • Health And Safety In Employment Act 1992
  • Food Act 1981 and amendments
  • Land Transport Management Act 2003
  • Agricultural Compounds and Veterinary Medicines Act 1997
  • Carriage Of Goods Act 1979
  • Official Information Act 1982
  • Privacy Act 1993
  • Sale Of Liquor Act 1989 and amendments
  • Smoke-Free Environments Act 1990 and amendments

All of the above Acts regulate activities that might regularly be carried out by an employee for whom the employer carries some legal responsibility. To avoid falling foul of this type of legislation, the employer must ensure that employees understand their responsibilities and how they must carry out their duties. Getting that information across to employees in a way that ensures compliance can be tricky without quality training and regular revision.

Regular revision

An efficient way of ensuring employees revise their understandings (especially if changes have been made to legislation) is to ask them to take an annual online assessment of their knowledge. An online assessment can be automatically marked and gives a quick, painless way of validating that knowledge. Pay increases/negotiations can be tagged to evidence that the information has been revised.

Online systems can easily be updated to reflect law changes and can also be delivered in a way that allows employees to use them as a quick point of reference if they are unsure how to manage a situation in the workday.
