Policies and procedures and troubleshooting databases One of the most effective methods of knowledge capture is through the use of a troubleshooting database. As long as all staff have access and can input issues, you are enabling knowledge capture throughout the company. ExampleCHH Tissue in Kawerau created procedures and mounted them online so that all operators on a number of different production lines could reference them. This meant whatever machine they were assigned to on any given production line, the operators could follow the set-up, run and shut down procedures for that machine. As operators became more experienced, they were able to apply their own fixes to malfunctions or product-below-spec problems. Each time they found a successful 'fix' they entered this into a troubleshooting database. The floor supervisor was automatically advised of a new entry, checked that it posed no risk to machine, product or person and approved it. At that point the 'fix' became live. Edutech KM designed the system of procedures online and the troubleshooting
database, working with operators, supervisors and management. The system
has a simple user-interface and an administration system.
