ISO compliance can be demonstrated easily to accreditors by allowing them to browse and print your networked information, or by burning a CD-ROM of the relevant material and allowing them to view it at their convenience.

Document control is much easier with an intranet system controlled by a database, because each piece of information is created once and can readily be updated.

Getting value

If you are taking the trouble to train people, you need to get best value from that training. That may mean installing a Learning Management System with customised reports.

If an employee calls in sick or is scheduled to take leave, supervisors or middle management need to be able to quickly identify suitably skilled replacements. With an LMS, a few clicks of the computer mouse and you can bring up a report of all those employees who have the necessary qualification or certificate.

An LMS can be a proprietary system or one created to suit your circumstances.

Box Hill Pulp and Paper (then owned by Visy)

Visy's Box Hill Pulp and Paper plant had a huge staff of over 500 operating over three shifts. When a shift member called in sick supervisors needed to be able to quickly contact an available person to come in. That employee needed to hold the correct certificates if they were expected to operate highly technical machinery.

Edutech KM staff were able to create a complete training database system that gave them the reporting options they needed, so at any time a supervisor could access a report of everyone who was available for that shift and who held the appropriate certificates or skills. The time spent searching for the right replacement was dramatically cut.
