Print resources still have an important place

There is a still a place for printed resources, even in our digital generation. Some of the reasons for this include:

  • Legislative compliance, where accessible hardcopy policies and procedures must be provided
  • Connectivity challenges, where access to an Internet or intranet connection is not available or reliable
  • Employee preference, where employees are not comfortable with computers
  • Fast reference, where having to move away from the site for an online connection and reference may slow down the process

Good educational design applies

Print resources require the same educational design processes as online design does:

  • A clear understanding of the learner group's level of language
  • Well-indexed and structured material that builds on prior knowledge
  • Use of well-designed templates for layout and text

Operation manuals stored at the machine operations workstation will sometimes be preferable to requiring an operator to walk to the operations office to look up key specs. Sometimes, all that is required is a quick checklist that an operator can use to reference key steps.

Examples

Tasman Pulp and Paper Company Ltd

Workers in the Tasman Pulp and Paper plant in Kawerau had to change machine settings regularly, depending on the product they were producing. The constant vibration and steamy environment on the plant floor was not safe for computers, so Edutech KM produced a pocket-sized, laminated flip card system for quick reference. While this still had the disadvantage of having to be recalled and replaced when product specs changed, it offered a quick reference for operators and helped improve productivity and quality.

Carter Holt Harvey Tissue

Carter Holt Harvey Tissue, where conditions are less harsh, has developed a hybrid system. Both plant training material and procedures are hosted online. However, operators can print off a procedure or product specs if they are less familiar with it. Each printed procedure comes with a warning that it is valid only for three days after the date of printing. Operators know that if they use out-of-date procedures and cause product deterioration, they will be held responsible.
